Direct Variation
Direct Variation is when the ratio of the value of the dependent variable to the value of the independent variable is constant.
In other words, one variable "varies directly" with the other variable.
It is written as...

were k = constant.
If you make $6 every hour, that would be a direct variation because that rate is constant. The number of hours "varies directly" with the amount you make.
y would represent the total amount made, the x would represent the hours worked, and the $6 would be the constant.

Distance Equation
Distance = Rate x Time is an example of direct variation because the distance is directly related to the rate and time.
We will use this formula for the next assignment but you can also use it in everyday life... please memorize it.
