Chapter 1.4 - Graphing

A coordinate plane is a two-dimenstional system used to lcate any point by its distance from a vertical axis and a horzontal axis.

A couple things to review...

the x-axis runs horizontally

the y-axis runs vertically

the two numbers used to describe a location of a point is called an ordered pair

there are 4 quadrants in a coordinate plane... know the names of each.

 

when graphing an ordered pair...

the x-coordinate (first number) tells you how far right or left to go of the origin

the y-coordinate (second number) tells you how far up or down to go of the origin

Identifying Proportional Relationship by Graphing.

Determining if the data on a graph is directly proportional is relatively easy.

 

If the line is straight ANDruns through the origin, it is directly proportional.

 

In the graph below, this information is directly proportional becasue it is a straight line AND runs through the orgin.
