Chapter 6.3 - Solving Equations

One Step Equation

Step 1 - Ask "what is happening to the variable?"

Step 2 - Undo it (in other words do the opposite)

Step 3 - Whatever you did in step 2, do to the other side of the equation.

(Think of an equation as a scale... to keep the equation true, keep the scale balanced.)

Step 4 - Check your solution

Look at these solutions to four different types of equations.

Solve one-step linear equations

Lesson #1                                             Video                                          Assignment

Two Step Equation

Step 1 - "Undo" term without the variable.

Step 2 - Whatever you did in step 1, do to the other side of the equation.

(Think of an equation as a scale... to keep the equation true, keep the scale balanced.)

Step 3 - Now, "undo" term with the variable.

Step 4 - Whatever you did in step 3, do to the other side of the equation.

(Think of an equation as a scale... to keep the equation true, keep the scale balanced.)

Step 5 - Check.

Look at this example below and notice how they followed these steps.

Solve two-step linear equations

Lesson #2                                             Video                                          Assignment

Just a reminder from section 1...

We could simplify an expression by combining like terms.

example of like terms - 3m and 7m or 4mn and 9mn

 Solve equations involving like terms

Lesson #3                                             Video                                          Assignment

Watching the video about the worksheet will not only give you some tips and hints,
it will also give you FREE ANSWERS!!!!

(make sure to have the answers next to the problems... don't just fill out the puzzle)

Show work on separate sheet of paper to get full credit.

Lesson #4                                             Video                                          Assignment

What do you do if come across an equation like this?   -6 + 4s = 2s

Watch this video to find out how you solve equations
with variables on both sides of the equation.

Solve equations with variables on both sides (Algebra)

Lesson #5                                             Video                                          Assignment

Is there only one solution to an equation? Not necessarily.

In this lesson we will look at examples with one, none or infinite solutions.

Identities and equations with no solutions (Algebra)
