Chapter 6.1 - Simplifying Expressions
Before we begin, let's define a few words.
Variable - quantity that can change, or vary, taking on different values
(usually represented with a letter)
Expression - one or a group of mathematical symbols representing a number or quantity
(example - 3x + 4)
Equation - mathematical statement containing an eqauls sign to show the two expression are equal (example 6 + 4 = 10 or 3 + x = 5)
Term - one part of an expression
(example - for the expression 2a + b, 2a and b are both terms
Coefficient - a number which mulitplies a variable
(example - 3 is the coefficient of 3x, or 5 is the coefficient of 5y)
Constant - a quantity having a fixed value that does not change or vary
(example - in the expression 3x + 4, 4 is the constant)
Use the image below to review the vocab words.
We will have a quiz over these words very soon.
Ch 6.1 Vocab
Simplifying an expression is different than evaluating an expression.
Simpifying an expression is removing any unneccessary terms or combining terms.
Evaluating an expression is "working out" the problem.
We could simplify an expression by combining like terms.
Like terms are terms that have identical variables.
example of like terms - 3m and 7m or 4mn and 9mn
Add and subtract like terms

Lesson #2 Video Assignment
You can also use math properties to help simplify expressions.
The first property we will use is the distributive property.
Distributive Property - a math "rule" used to multiply a single term & two or more terms inside a set of parentheses.
Take look at the problem below.
Distributive property (8th Grade)
Lesson #3 Video Assignment
Associative Property - math "rule" that says you can change the grouping of a multiplication problem without changing the answer (move parentheses)
Commutative Property - math "rule" that says you can change the order of the addends without changing the answer
Simply variable expressions using properties (8th Grade)
