Chapter 4.3 - Exponents &

Negative Bases

The base is the number that is being multiplied by itself.

The exponent is the small number placed to the upper-right of a number.  It shows the number of times the base will be multiplied by itself.

Make sure you understand the difference between these two expressions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The 2nd expression can be read "the opposite of 3 squared".

Any base to the 0 power = 1.
